While I haven't celebrated orthodox Christmas in decades, last few years have seen a change to that, since my girlfriend likes me to be with her when she visits her family for the holiday. There are a few cute rituals about it, presented in this small picture here. I imagine that Ritz, while not religious much himself, would always take an excuse to make a big dinner with lots of food from back home.
From left to right:
- Jovan is what is called a "polozajnik" who's dude is to light up bits of wood brought inside the house for good fortune. The more sparks he makes, the better the fortune will it be. Guess he overdid it.![XD :XD:]()
- Frankincense is also used, in small bits, to bless and purify the food and the guests. It also smells REAL nice, as Blunty will testify![:D (Big Grin) :D]()
- "Cesnica" is a bread baked for the dinner and there are usually bits and bobs put in it for guests to find. Finding a coin means that you will find great fortune, piece of cornus usually means good health and so on. Strasimira is not happy with what she got.![;) (Wink) ;)]()
Keep in mind that each region, town, village and even household has it's own version and order of these rituals, so much so it makes me think this is a purely pagan country.![LOL ]()
